Spotlight: Karen Covington-Yow

A Southern Appalachian Christmas is showing December 8-18, 2022 here at Southern Appalachian Repertory Theatre!

In this holiday musical set right here in WNC, Sara hasn’t been home for Christmas since she moved to New York six years ago. Now, for the first time in years, Sara is back in her hometown, celebrating with the family and friends she left behind. During this visit, she learns exactly what’s most important to her and gains a new respect for where she came from. It’s a story of love, hope, and cheer during the holiday season.

We reached out to Karen Covington-Yow to find out more about her and her experience working on this production.

What is your favorite part of this show and why?

My favorite part of this show is working with all my friends, and I have a secret desire to wear ugly Christmas sweaters at every opportunity!

What have you loved so far about working with SART?

I love the people at SART, and every time I come back, I have an instant family again.

Tell us about your character. What’s your favorite thing about them? What do you love about getting to portray them?

Sue is a lot like me in that she always tries to look on the bright side of every situation, and she really loves Christmas. I also get to portray the wife of my real husband, Mike, and FINALLY get to play mother to Madison, whom we have called our stage daughter for years.

How did you get into theatre?

I've always been a performer, and my stage craving started early. I definitely get that from my daddy, who will jump on on stage at any opportunity to sing and play guitar.

What’s your favorite thing to do in the area?

Um, theatre, of course! Besides that, I love Biltmore Estate and the WNC Nature Center. Dollywood is less than 2 hours away, and I'm a big Dolly fan!

What about this production are you the most excited about?

I am excited that an audience will finally get to see the world premiere of this show that was postponed due to COVID. And getting to perform a show written by a friend is an honor and an added bonus !

What’s your favorite part about performing?

I love bringing joy to people, and seeing them smile or laugh because of me is amazing!

Do you have any upcoming projects we should check out?

Next up in January is The 39 Steps at Black Mountain Center for the Arts, followed by Happy Death Day 2U with Murder Mystery for Hire in February.
